The Apple Of Eden dinner party was arranged to coincide with Frieze Art Fair, accompanying openings and general debauchery. My second collaboration with Charlie Hills in the kitchen, but also with Benji Kandler arranging the guest list.

We transformed Charlie’s subterranean dining room into what was coined a giant ‘womb’ with swathes of red fabric drooping from the front door, strung ceiling to ceiling, and covering every wall. Sewn into the billows were an array of red beads and chandelier crystals, catching the light of an excessive amount of candles as they nestled into the moss bed of the dining table. All of it inspired by the first woman, a true figure from mythology; Lilith.

Lilith doesn’t exist in the bible. Understandably. Instead she finds her origin in medieval Hebrew texts. They paint her as an equal to Adam in Eden, and detail her escape as Adam attempts to force her to bend to his will. This version of the story speaks to feminine empowerment, enduring love, the fall of angels and the temptation of Eve. Ultimately it is Lilith who tricks her in snake’s guise to eat from the tree of knowledge, hoping to liberate her from her own ignorance and give her the ability to make her own choices.

Obsessed with the motif of sin and virtue I went about making a ceramic collection that embodied this. The ceramic apple contained Charlie’s dessert. The stand supported a cut of Xan Anderson’s bone marrow fudge, and the dish manoeuvred a glass of absinthe and a single sugar cube.
